How to make iron-on transfers
Step 1- Choosing a pattern Choose an image that has clean, bold outlines, such as a children's coloring book picture. Try simple images first, then work up to more complex shapes. Try tracing a photo or image with a thick black marker to make a pattern.
Step 2- Prepare for ribbon Work on an ironing board or a sturdy surface covered with a towel. Lay your image flat, then cover with clean glass or a polylon sheet.
Step 3- Outline with ribbon We suggest you practice with scraps to get a feel for using Hot Ribbon. Only heat the glossy side of the ribbon.
• Pre-heat iron Set your Mini-Iron to Medium heat. Test on a scrap. If the glossy side of the ribbon looks melted, turn down the heat.
• Outlining With one finger, guide the ribbon along the pattern, tacking in place with the iron as you go. The glossy side of the ribbon always faces up. The dull side is the adhesive.
• Trimming With a sharp pair of scissors, clip the ends of your ribbon whenever you come to a sharp corner or finish using a color. You can also trim when you are completely done.
• Keep iron moving Avoid going over the same area too much or holding the hot iron in one place too long to avoid scorching the ribbon.
• Keep iron clean Clean any glue build-up off the iron immediately with steel wool or a commercial iron cleaner.
• Iron Protection Sheet Use the iron protection sheet between the iron and ribbon to avoid scorching when going over large areas.
• Finishing filling Once the area has been filled, pull the outline from under the glass. Trim any uneven edges, then cover with the outline and tack in place.
Step 5 - Preparing image to transfer Carefully peel completed image off the glass. Use a bamboo pick or palette knife (no fingers!) to lift the image and avoid warping. Place on a chosen clean, flat surface for final ironing.
Step 6 - Final Ironing Iron your done image onto your chosen surface. Use the Iron Protection Sheet to protect the glossy ribbon surface from the heat of the iron. Iron for 40 sec. on a dry setting, medium-high temp. Avoid moving your project until colled.
• Good surfaces These projects iron best onto cottons, poly-blends, denim, cloth shoes, baseball caps, paper, and similar materials. Iron longer on thicker material
